Studio policy

A commitment to regular, weekly lessons and daily practice is required to build a voice.  Individual lesson plans and practice schedules will be assessed for each student.  In addition to vocal technique, students are expected to study musicianship (sight-singing and rhythm).  Technique and musicianship exercises appropriate to the level of the individual student are provided in the lessons.  Repertoire will be reviewed in lessons, after which a student will be responsible for purchasing suggested books outside of the studio.

The studio for voice has an annual recital, which is required for all students age 18 years and below. Most of our students also participate in the statewide Certificate of Merit Program and the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.  Advanced students, at the teacher’s discretion, are invited to participate in various programs and competitions.  A partial list of these can be found in the Competitions and Programs section of this website. If a student enters a studio-sponsored competition or evaluation program, or is making a supervised recording, our studio policy is to add a participation fee in the form of make-up credits to cover some of the teacher volunteer time routinely given for these.  Many teachers who take their students through programs such as CM charge their own fees to compensate for their time.  Instead, this studio includes the fee in the form of make-up time credits (unless a parent prefers to pay the fee). Teacher volunteer time includes arranging and uploading music for our accompanist, preparing/administering/grading theory tests, assisting students/parents through the enrollment process or enrolling students, scheduling and organizing the programs, teacher training sessions, and for CM/NATS/VOCE, working on site evaluation day or paying a teacher fee to cover those work hours.

For students who attend weekly lessons, tuition is due in advance on the 1st of each month.  Monthly tuition is pro-rated only when a student is either starting lessons for the first time, or discontinuing lessons.

Make-up lessons policy:

We are happy to provide make-up lessons with a minimum of 24 hours advance notice. Students must schedule make-up times outside of their regular lesson time slot — regular lesson times cannot be used for make-ups. Please click on the following link to check the studio calendar for available make-up times, and then notify me of your choice by email or phone: Make-up lesson calendar  Lessons missed due to real emergencies that arise the same day as a lesson, such as student illness, will be considered as make-up lessons. However, if a student is concerned that s/he is becoming ill the day before a lesson, we request that you notify us at that time, and not wait until the next day. Messages can be left at any time day or night on the studio line.

Studio holidays:

The calendar is designed in such a way that a “make-up” is always built into our calendar for a specified holiday. These built-in make-ups usually fall on the same month or an adjacent month to the holiday, and occasionally on a month earlier or further on in the school year.  This makes scheduling easier (as many students are away for scheduled holidays anyway), and enables us to keep tuition amounts consistent from month to month.
